Design & Construction
Designed around a planing aluminium hull and superstructure she features a 8.99m beam and a 2.49m draft. The yacht has an internal volume of 626 GT (Gross Tonnes).
She was delivered to her owners in July 1993.
Exterior Design
Ronin features a raked bow, which contributes to its streamlined appearance and aids in cutting through waves more effectively. The hull is finished in Awlgrip, a high-quality coating that adds to its resilience and longevity. The hull’s grey colour contrasts with the white superstructure, creating a clean and modern look. The boot top and below the waterline sections are painted black, adding a sharp and defined edge to the yacht’s profile.
Ronin's superstructure is defined by its geometric volumes and sharply-wrought angles, eschewing traditional yacht design norms. This approach results in a vessel that resembles the body of an insect, with the pilothouse as the head and the main and upper decks forming the thorax and abdomen. This design choice creates a unique profile that sets Ronin apart from conventional yachts.
The superstructure comprises interconnected, free-form geometric shapes, devoid of any curved lines or rounded surfaces. The angles and facets of the exterior are reminiscent of a broadly-cut gem or an elaborate origami piece. This design not only provides a distinctive aesthetic but also accommodates the client’s requirement for unobstructed outside views and ample natural light entry through wide windows.
Ronin’s design prioritizes efficiency and reliability, drawing inspiration from the dynamics of military craft. The hull form, a semi-displacement patrol-boat type, was carefully tested and refined to ensure stability and high performance. The deep-V entry and zero-deadrise stern enhance the hull’s planing ability, contributing to the yacht’s speed and agility.
Interior Design
Ronin's interior avoids the typical mirrored walls, chrome staircases, chandeliers, and gaudy fabrics found in other contemporary superyachts. Instead, the design emphasizes simplicity, natural light, and an uncluttered feel.
The interior spaces are defined by wide windows that allow ample natural light to flood the rooms and provide unobstructed views of the outside from both the main and upper decks. The overall decor employs a minimalist approach with unobtrusive shapes, elemental colors, and earthy textures. This design philosophy creates a serene environment conducive to relaxation.
The saloon, a central feature of the yacht, benefits from an innovative layout. Unlike traditional yachts, which typically have windows and doors only along the sides and aft, Ronin's saloon includes two additional picture windows facing diagonally forward. This design choice offers guests forward-facing views, enhancing the connection with the surrounding seascape.
The interior materials were chosen for their lightness, impact resistance, moisture resistance, and soundproofing qualities. Honeycombed veneers are used in doors, while cored marine ply is utilized for cabinetry. In bathrooms and service areas, synthetically-cored veneered panels provide durability and ease of maintenance. Wall panels and furnishings are mounted on a sub-frame, further isolating the joinery from the yacht's aluminum structure to minimize noise transmission into the sleeping quarters and social areas.
The decorative scheme is straightforward, featuring white-painted furniture, pale upholstery, and natural-fiber floor coverings. This choice of materials and colors maintains the yacht's understated aesthetic while ensuring practicality and comfort for guests.
Accommodation
Below decks, Ronin can host up to eight guests in four double cabins. These guest cabins are thoughtfully arranged off a central corridor, ensuring easy access and a seamless experience.
The accommodation also features an owner's suite, which is a private apartment set behind the pilothouse on the upper deck. This exclusive area includes a sleeping and dining area, providing the owner with a secluded space for relaxation. Additionally, the owner's suite boasts a separate cantilevered sun deck, allowing for private outdoor enjoyment.
Crew accommodation is located forward on the lower deck. This area is designed to house the first officer, engineers, and up to eight crew members. The layout includes a laundry and workshop, divided by an amidships watertight bulkhead, ensuring operational efficiency and privacy between the crew and guest areas.
Performance & Capabilities
Powered by twin diesel MTU (16V 595 TE90) 16-cylinder 6,000hp engines running at 1800rpm, motor yacht Ronin is capable of reaching a top speed of 34 knots, and comfortably cruises at 25 knots. With her 130,000 litre fuel tanks she has a maximum range of 3,700 nautical miles at 18 knots. Her planing hull design means she is fast and efficient as she slices through the water.
