The move comes as part of efforts to secure hundreds of jobs and maintain shipbuilding operations at the historic site following Nobiskrug’s application for insolvency in December 2024.
The provisional insolvency administrators, Dr. Christoph Morgen and Hendrik Gittermann, confirmed that Lürssen’s notarized offer will be reviewed in the week following the formal opening of insolvency proceedings. If approved, the Rendsburg shipyard will be integrated into Lürssen’s neighboring Kröger shipyard, creating a stronger, more sustainable future for the facility.

Nobiskrug will be retained as a shipbuilding and industrial site. This is good news in these uncertain times. With Lürssen, there is a buyer with the economic capacity and the necessary expertise to bring the shipyard back into calmer waters

Securing Jobs and Industry Stability
The insolvency of Nobiskrug, along with its sister company FSG, put the jobs of approximately 500 employees at risk. However, the latest developments bring hope to the workforce, as a transition company has been established to help employees retain employment during the restructuring process. Over 95% of the shipyard’s workers have already signed on to this initiative, signaling confidence in the future under new ownership.
Michael Schmidt, Chairman of the IG Metall workers’ union in Flensburg, welcomed the proposed takeover, stating that it provides a long-term perspective for Rendsburg. Meanwhile, IG Metall Rendsburg Chairman, Dr. Martin Bitter, emphasized that Lürssen is well-equipped to stabilize and modernize the shipyard, ensuring it remains an active hub for shipbuilding.

We are delighted that the takeover by Lürssen has created a long-term perspective for Rendsburg. The traditional company is an excellent fit for Nobiskrug. In addition, the capacities and locations of the two shipyards complement each other almost perfectly

Strategic Expansion for Lürssen
Lürssen, a family-owned company based in Bremen, is a dominant force in the global superyacht industry. Having built and delivered more than 80 luxury yachts, including the world’s largest yachts by length and gross tonnage -Azzam and Dilbar - as well as some of the most iconic vessels like Nord, the company’s order book remains full, with 10 yachts currently under construction or on forward order.
With demand for new builds and refit projects growing, the additional capacity from acquiring Nobiskrug would allow Lürssen to expand its production capabilities and better serve its high-end clientele. The acquisition would also strengthen Lürssen’s refit business, which has become an increasingly important segment in the superyacht industry, as owners look for high-quality maintenance and upgrade facilities for their vessels.
