Design & Construction
Designed around a displacement ice class steel hull and an aluminium superstructure she features a 16.3m beam and a 4.6m draft. The yacht is built over 5 decks with an internal volume of 5,148 GT (Gross Tonnes). The design also incorporates a heli-pad.
Construction started in late 1996 with the keel laid under the project name 'Opal'. Launched in June 2008 this yacht undertook sea trials over the following months. She was delivered to her owners in August 2008.
Exterior Design
Tim Heywood's design for Al Raya, originally conceived as Dilbar for Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, showcases a sleek and sophisticated yacht that aligns with the regal requirements of its current owner, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain.
The raked bow sets a distinguished tone, with lines gracefully flowing towards an expansive transom, offering guests access to the spacious beach club through sweeping staircases from the lower deck.
The yacht's impressive and commanding stern is heightened by its high sides, featuring double symmetrical staircases guiding guests from the transom to the luxurious entertaining areas on each aft deck. External staircases for convenient access are positioned forward of amidships.
Privacy is a key consideration, with horizontal slats in the superstructure offering shelter on the side decks of the main deck, leading to the stern, where tenders can be launched. Balconies disrupt the clean lines forward of amidships, providing additional private exterior space and enhancing bridge navigation flexibility. Each deck level boasts a subtle curvature and large windows invite natural light into the interior spaces.
The sun deck features an aft helipad and a jacuzzi for guest enjoyment in the forward part. This design ensures flexibility, as the aft helipad transforms into a versatile space when not in use for air transfers.
Interior Design
The interior styling of the Al Raya yacht is both elegant and practical. Rich wooden elements abound, enhancing the overall ambiance. The polished wood, complemented by black accents, provides a striking yet understated aesthetic. Inset lighting in the ceilings not only adds a visual flair but also expands the interior space, complemented by ample natural light from the expansive windows.
The private study exudes sophistication, featuring glass cabinets, cream and black lampshades, and plush cream sofas with subtle black piping. A baroque-style dining table, supported by claw feet, is surrounded by four early 19th-century chairs in a tasteful black and deep mahogany palette.
Glossy surfaces throughout the yacht reflect light, creating a seamless flow in each room. The salon, with its herringbone wooden floor, sets the stage for comfortable easy chairs and sofas, providing an inviting space for guests to relax as they enjoy the sounds of a piano and sip drinks from the bar. Evening intimacy is achieved with draped windows, while a prominent globe serves as a reminder of the yacht's ability to transport guests worldwide in absolute comfort.
In other salon areas, handcrafted silk carpets add warmth, complemented by early 20th-century club chairs adorned with gold details for comfortable seating. A subtle touch of Chinese influence subtly runs through the decor, reflected in various artworks and meticulous details. One dining room boasts an expansive oval table for ten guests, surrounded by golden chairs paired with deep grey velvet. Overhead, three chandeliers illuminate the space. Another dining area, accommodating 16 guests, features an intricately designed dark wood table with a light wood inlay.
Cabins embrace the space, adopting a simpler aesthetic with neutral colors, subtle patterns, and a glossy wood finish. The business center exudes formality, featuring black leather furnishings, a sleek conference table with black trim, and dark inset shelves on the walls. The floor, a stunning highlight, showcases black inlay against a high-gloss wooden backdrop. Black onyx brings luxury to the bathrooms.
