Lurssen’s first yacht in the 50m (164ft) to 60m (197ft) range since 1995 is moving ever closer as final preparations are made for her summer delivery.
The 55m (180.5ft) motor yacht MOON SAND, formerly known as Project 13800, is - fantastically - the smallest vessel undertaken by the yard since the launch of motor yacht XENIA (now known as ENVY) in 1995.
It is part of a conscious decision by the German builder to re-establish the brand as a serious proposition for yachts in the 55m (164ft) to 75m (246ft) bracket, as Lurssen Managing Partner, Peter Lurssen explains:
“We are very grateful for the success of all the large yachts we have built, however, our core business is between 60 to 90 metres and Lürssen has delivered more vessels over the last 15 years under 90 metres than above! As long as it is a bespoke yacht, Lürssen is the right shipyard.”
Initially announced in September 2018, the bespoke yacht Moon Sand came out of the building sheds for a series of tests in April 2020, before being moved to the outfitting hall where she currently remains.
She is based on the classic yacht CARINTHIA VI, built in 1972 by Lurssen. It represents a step back to the future for Bannenberg & Rowell who are responsible for motor yacht Moon Sand’s interior and exterior design, as it was Jon Bannenberg who was responsible for the design of classic yacht Carinthia VI.
Motor yacht Moon Sands draws on the heritage of classic yacht Carinthia VI, but retains her own strong identity. She sports a series of harmonious lines and maximized exterior deck space to allow for a number of entertainment areas for the Asian owner and their family. The bespoke nature of the yacht is further showcased inside with custom furniture supplied and a series of family-friendly features.
The true nature of the stature of recent builds by Lurssen is shown by the fact that of the 50 plus yachts it has delivered since the turn of the millennium, the average length is 95.7m (314ft). It is also responsible for five of the ten largest yachts ever built by length in the Top 100, including 180.65m (592.6ft) superyacht AZZAM, the longest of all.
