The 28.42m Sport Fisher yacht Speculator was delivered to her owners in 2017 by American shipyard Viking Yachts. Her naval architecture and exterior design comes from the drawing boards of Viking Yachts.
Key Features
- Luxurious and fast offshore fishing yacht
- Owner's suite with twin ensuite bathrooms
- Sociable galley with bar entertainment area
- Equipped with a "tuna tower" for fishing
Design & Construction
Designed around a planing GRP hull and superstructure she features a 7.34m beam and a 1.8m draft. The yacht is built over 3 decks with an internal volume of 149 GT (Gross Tonnes).
This was the seventh yacht built on the Viking 92EB design.
Exterior Design
Speculator's sleek, commanding lines and robust build are immediately noticeable. The yacht's profile is optimized for serious offshore fishing, yet the styling retains a sense of elegance.
On approaching the Speculator, one's attention is drawn to the prominent fighting chair at the stern surrounded by rod holders, an essential element for deep-sea anglers. The engine access and crew quarters are located just beneath this space, thoughtfully integrated into the overall design.
Moving forward, there is a welcoming seating area for observers or guests to relax and observe the fishing activity. Above this space, an additional seating area offers a raised vantage point, enhancing the social aspect of the yacht without compromising its functional purpose.
The most striking feature is perhaps the expansive aft deck, which transforms into a social hub once the day's fishing is complete. Here, a bar, entertainment system, and ample lounge seating create an inviting atmosphere for guests to gather and unwind.
Notably, the yacht features a tuna tower, extending the vessel's profile and serving as a practical lookout for spotting fish. The substantial outriggers further emphasize the Speculator's dedication to fishing.
Interior Design
The main salon features a mixture of fine woods and soft textiles, creating a welcoming atmosphere ideal for relaxation after a day of fishing. The lighting within is strategically placed to offer both ambiance and functionality, enhancing the natural light that floods in during the daytime.
Central to the salon is a large, retractable television, providing entertainment and a focal point for guests. Adjacent to this area is an expansive bar and galley, both of which are integral to the social experience on board. The galley is equipped with modern cooking appliances and a comprehensive sink setup, designed to handle the preparation of any catch or cuisine. The countertops, resilient and easy to clean, cater to both the preparation of fresh meals and casual socializing.
The dining area features a dedicated space with a table and seating, allowing guests to enjoy meals with a view of the surrounding waters. This area is both functional and modest, with an emphasis on comfort and accessibility. The helm, located on the upper deck, boasts state-of-the-art navigation and control systems, surrounded by multi-function screens for comprehensive monitoring of the yacht's operations. The helm's layout is intuitive and straightforward, ensuring ease of use even during intense fishing pursuits.
Accommodation
Speculator offers ample space for up to 10 guests, featuring five well-appointed cabins to ensure comfort and privacy. Each cabin is designed to provide a restful environment after a day of activity, with en-suite facilities and storage for personal items.
At the pinnacle of guest quarters is the owner's suite, a spacious retreat boasting expansive accommodations. The suite includes a large bed, considerable storage including a walk-in wardrobe, and a safe for valuables. The en-suite features a twin arrangement with separate areas for privacy and convenience, including a shower.
Additional guest cabins are situated throughout the yacht, each with its own character. The VIP guest cabin located in the bow includes AV equipment and wardrobe space, complemented by an en-suite with a shower. Other cabins maintain the same level of comfort, with hanging lockers, storage options, and private en-suite facilities that include showers.
Accessible via the aft deck, the crew area for two members includes necessary amenities such as a wine cooler, head, and shower. The cabin arrangement typically suits a single skipper arrangement, in line with the yacht's focus on serious offshore fishing expeditions rather than extended cruising.
Performance & Capabilities
Speculator is powered by twin MTU (16V 2000M 96L) diesel engines, each boasting 16 cylinders in a V formation, delivering a colossal 2,600 horsepower per engine. This remarkable powerplant propels the Speculator to an impressive top speed of approximately 36 knots.
When it comes to cruising, Speculator maintains a steady pace of 30 knots, offering a blend of speed and efficiency for extended voyages. The range at this cruising speed is around 650 miles, enabling substantial journeys without the need for frequent refueling stops. However, for those seeking to maximize distance, reducing speed to a leisurely 10 knots extends the range to approximately 2,000 nautical miles.
The installation of Dometic Spot Zero for water purification, ensures the quality of onboard water supply meets the highest standards. Additionally, the yacht is equipped with generators that support the yacht's extensive electrical requirements.
