In an ordinary boat show, the 90m Oceanco yacht DAR would attract significant attention. However, the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show is anything but ordinary, featuring an impressive three superyachts exceeding 100m in length.
Surprisingly, a yacht of DAR's size and stature does not dominate the focus of this year's premier superyacht show, reflecting the rapid evolution of the superyacht industry.
According to YachtBuyer Intelligence, the world's largest yacht is the Lürssen yacht DILBAR, which ranks number one on the YB100 - the world's biggest yachts, measuring 156m in length and boasting an impressive volume of 15,917 GT, the true measure of superyacht size. DILBAR has held first place since September 2020, a total of 1,484 days at the time of writing.
In contrast, the 90m yacht DAR ranks 104th on the YB100 list of the world's biggest yachts by volume and narrowly misses out on the Top 100 - world's longest yachts (102nd), illustrating the ongoing transformation of the superyacht landscape.
Designed by Luiz De Basto, DAR’s exterior draws inspiration from hammerhead sharks, resulting in an aggressive yet streamlined profile. The striking contrast between the dark glass hull and white balconies makes a bold statement. Its futuristic superstructure boasts nearly 400 square meters of glass glued to the main deck and sundeck, eliminating mechanical fasteners. This innovative design reduces glare and offers exceptional privacy, even with the lights on. De Basto aimed to create a superyacht that "concealed its volume and decks within a shapely glass envelope," prioritizing the owners' desire for privacy.
Upon its launch, DAR earned a Judge's Commendation for Best Technical Achievement at the Boat International Design and Innovation Awards. It returns to MYS this year after winning the ‘Finest New Yacht of the MYS’ award and the Exterior Design Award during its debut at the Monaco Yacht Show 2018.
While in good company, the yacht DAR is overshadowed by her neighbors at Port Hercule. In a last-minute twist, the Lürssen yacht GOLDEN ODYSSEY took the berth originally assigned to the 105m Oceanco yacht H3, thus creating a media frenzy as the largest yacht ever to appear at the Monaco Yacht Show. With GOLDEN ODYSSEY's appearance, both the 122m Lürssen yacht KISMET and the 112m Freire Shipyard yacht RENAISSANCE were surpassed—not only in length but also in volume.
A yacht's gross tonnage (GT) is the true measure of size, representing the actual internal volume of the yacht. Unlike length, which is a linear measurement, GT is a volumetric measure that encompasses the entire space within the yacht’s hull and superstructure, providing a comprehensive sense of its size.
Of the four largest superyachts at the show, two yachts are for sale, DAR and GOLDEN ODYSSEY. The yachts KISMET and RENAISSANCE are on show for luxury yacht charter. Yacht DAR is berthed at D01 on Quai Rainer III in Port Hercule. Superyacht buyers are advised to contact their broker directly at the earliest opportunity to secure a viewing.
