Sanlorenzo has announced it will be building a new flagship 72m (236ft) superyacht, in what it calls the “crowning achievement of an unparalleled year.”
The new 72Steel will feature a hybrid diesel-electric engine system, and is set to be delivered to her European Owner in the Spring of 2025. The news comes as Sanlorenzo also announced the sale of two further units of its 62Steel model, to cap a record-breaking year for its Superyacht Division.
The Superyacht Division, which builds yachts of 40m (131ft) and above, has experienced a “significant increase in production activity” in 2021 according to the yard, with six superyachts delivered and six superyachts launched.
Ferruccio Rossi, President of Sanlorenzo’s Superyacht Division, explained more: “The results of 2021 have been so far excellent, in particular for the significant growth in the backlog, which allows us to have an extensive visibility on future growth.”
“We have been positively impressed by the response we have had at all the boat shows, starting with the Cannes kermesse, then confirmed by an outstanding Monaco Yacht Show, which have been very useful occasions for presenting our new models, consolidating relationships with our clients and initiating new ones. The pride of having signed the contract for our first 72Steel, the largest Sanlorenzo ever to be built and which will be in the water in 2025, is the crowning achievement of an unparalleled year.”
Spread across five decks and with a volume of 1,850GT the 72Steel has an eye on the future, being equipped with what Sanlorenzo is calling the “greatest green technology available on the market”.
“The hybrid diesel-electric engine system represents a combination of innovative solutions which make it possible to significantly reduce emissions into the atmosphere and the sea, ensure high levels of comfort and rationalise the spaces dedicated to the engine area in favour of the internal volume available for owners and guests, thus presenting itself as a new paradigm for superyachts of this size” said Antonio Santella, New Product Development Director of Sanlorenzo's Superyacht Division.
Currently, details are still scarce on the new superyacht, although it is known regular Sanlorenzo collaborator, Studio Zuccon, will be responsible for the external design and it will feature a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. The Owner will have his own private deck above the bridge deck, and the main deck will be reserved for guests with lounge areas and five spacious cabins. There is also set to be an extensive wellness area onboard.
The news of the record-breaking year doesn’t come as a complete surprise with many yards announcing booming sales figures in 2021. In September we brought you the news that Sanlorenzo closed off an impressive summer with the sale of the third and fourth hulls of its 57Steel and the launch of its second 62Steel. Prior to that, the yard announced that it had sold eight superyachts between 44m and 57m (144ft and 187ft) from May to August.
Sanlorenzo’s Steel line has proved very popular thanks to its long-range cruising capabilities, spectacular beach clubs and vast deck terraces and it has contributed to making the Ligurian-Tuscan shipyard one of the busiest in the world.
